Note: a key difference between level 4 and level 5 is the interoperability and re-usability of data across organisations. Two "level 4" organisations can be operating in FAIR silos with limited interoperability.

FAIR_Meta_Principle FAIR_Principle_1 FAIR_Sub_Principle Description Typical FAIRMM level
Findable F1 - (Meta)data are assigned a globally unique and persistent identifier 1
Findable F2 - Data are described with rich metadata (defined by R1 ) 1
Findable F3 - Metadata clearly and explicitly include the identifier of the data they describe 3
Findable F4 - (Meta)data are registered or indexed in a searchable resource 3
Accessible A1 - (Meta)data are retrievable by their identifier using a standardised communications protocol 1
Accessible A1.1 The protocol is open, free, and universally implementable 3
Accessible A1.2 The protocol allows for an authentication and authorisation procedure, where necessary 2
Accessible A2 - Metadata are accessible, even when the data are no longer available 3
Interoperable I1 - (Meta)data use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language for knowledge representation 4
Interoperable I2 - (Meta)data use vocabularies that follow FAIR principles 4
Interoperable I3 - Meta)data include qualified references to other (meta)data 4
Reusable R1 - (Meta)data are richly described with a plurality of accurate and relevant attributes 4
Reusable R1 R1.1 (Meta)data are released with a clear and accessible data usage license 2
Reusable R1 R1.2 (Meta)data are associated with detailed provenance 3
Reusable R1 R1.3 (Meta)data meet domain-relevant community standards 4
