- FAIR MM levels: from FAIR Maturity Matrix Version 1.1
Note: a key difference between level 4 and level 5 is the interoperability and re-usability of data across organisations. Two "level 4" organisations can be operating in FAIR silos with limited interoperability.
| FAIR_Meta_Principle | FAIR_Principle_1 | FAIR_Sub_Principle | Description | Typical FAIRMM level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Findable | F1 | - | (Meta)data are assigned a globally unique and persistent identifier | 1 |
| Findable | F2 | - | Data are described with rich metadata (defined by R1 ) | 1 |
| Findable | F3 | - | Metadata clearly and explicitly include the identifier of the data they describe | 3 |
| Findable | F4 | - | (Meta)data are registered or indexed in a searchable resource | 3 |
| Accessible | A1 | - | (Meta)data are retrievable by their identifier using a standardised communications protocol | 1 |
| Accessible | A1.1 | The protocol is open, free, and universally implementable | 3 | |
| Accessible | A1.2 | The protocol allows for an authentication and authorisation procedure, where necessary | 2 | |
| Accessible | A2 | - | Metadata are accessible, even when the data are no longer available | 3 |
| Interoperable | I1 | - | (Meta)data use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language for knowledge representation | 4 |
| Interoperable | I2 | - | (Meta)data use vocabularies that follow FAIR principles | 4 |
| Interoperable | I3 | - | Meta)data include qualified references to other (meta)data | 4 |
| Reusable | R1 | - | (Meta)data are richly described with a plurality of accurate and relevant attributes | 4 |
| Reusable | R1 | R1.1 | (Meta)data are released with a clear and accessible data usage license | 2 |
| Reusable | R1 | R1.2 | (Meta)data are associated with detailed provenance | 3 |
| Reusable | R1 | R1.3 | (Meta)data meet domain-relevant community standards | 4 |
